Story Behind The Painting: To Stand Where The Wildflowers Dance

Story Behind The Painting: To Stand Where The Wildflowers Dance

Wildflowers have always fascinated me because they grow freely in some of the most unlikely places without intentional human aid. They live and survive resiliently in diverse terrains while gracing the world with their magic and beauty.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I've stood in fields of wildflowers, completely awestruck by their beauty and uniqueness. To experience the way they seemingly dance in the wind is truly a fascinating sight to see. When this painting started to take form, it made me remember the wildflower lined trails in Oregon and Washington. Here are just a few pictures I've taken over the years during those hikes:

When I first started this painting, I had every intention of painting a bouquet of roses. Still, it took on the spirit of a wildflower and grew freely into what it is now. It was meant to be a field of wildflowers dancing in the wind; I just didn't know that when I pulled out my paint and brushes. While painting, one word kept coming to mind - freedom. My initial brush strokes were defined and refrained; however, that didn't feel right. It wasn't until I loosened my strokes that it had the FREEDOM to take on a life of its own.

After finishing this piece, I stumbled upon a scripture in the bible where it talks about wildflowers, oddly enough. I like how The Message translation paraphrases this scripture: "Walk into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They don’t fuss with their appearance—but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. If God gives such attention to the wildflowers, most of them never even seen, don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?"

Someone once put it like this, "The special interest and intricate care that God places on the beautiful adornment of a little wild, wayside flower which blossoms today, but tomorrow quickly fades and is burnt in the noonday sun should create in us a confident trust in God's faithful provision for each of His children."

In a time where fear levels are at an all-time high, those words provide me with comfort, peace, and reassurance. It doesn't mean I won't face hard times. It doesn't mean those hard times won't hurt. It doesn't mean I should abandon my instinct to prepare for hard times. It merely means there will be things I won't be able to control, and during those times, I have to trust that God will come through and (at the very least) provide my daily needs somehow.

Whatever your beliefs might be, I hope this painting encourages you. I hope it serves as a reminder that we were created resilient like wildflowers - able to grow and adapt in the most challenging situations. I also hope it reminds you that you are not alone. You are like one wildflower in a meadow overflowing with other wildflowers. There are people ready and willing to help when we feel we can't help ourselves. That's why there isn't just one wildflower in this painting, but many.

So, whenever you find yourself facing a difficult time, imagine yourself in a sea of wildflowers and remind yourself that everything will be ok. You are resilient and will survive the most unlikely circumstances. Everything you endure today only adds beauty to your story.
