Saturday pancakes have become a tradition in my house. It’s something we look forward to every week. It’s become a time where we have some of the most joy-filled, thought-provoking conversations. I think it’s a mixture of it being the weekend, creating a happy tradition, and delicious food that makes it easier to connect with one another. Taking the joy and lightheartedness of those conversations, I wanted to create a collection that encourages a deeper connection between people, bringing them closer to each other.
Here are just a few pieces from this collection and the stories that made them:
Party With Friends 1
One thing I've become more grateful for during this season of my life--my community. My friends bring color and life to my existence. I painted this with many colors, textures, and shapes because every friend adds something different to our life. When all those friends are under one roof it's a beautiful and harmonious collision of different personalities, beliefs, and ideas.
What If We Could Climb a Ladder To The Stars?
It's not so much about the question(name of the painting) as it is about creating a safe atmosphere for loved ones to bring their thoughts, ideas, and questions to the table. Without fear of criticism or rejection. One thing I love about Saturday Pancakes in our house--it's where we talk about all the random thoughts/questions in our head/heart. Sometimes we talk about things that don't make a whole lot of sense, but we talk about them because they pop into our minds. I wanted to create a painting that reminds us of our place in harboring an atmosphere of, "no question/thought is too silly". Those questions/thoughts, as silly as they may sound, lead to further/deeper conversation. Conversations we may not have had otherwise.
The weekend always reminds me of adventure and road trips. What goes better with a road trip than a playlist for the drive? I love creating playlists for road trips and drives through the country. The music just adds to the whole experience. I've been on several road trips and they've always been a great way to connect with the people in the car. It's the perfect atmosphere for great conversations! The black lines in this painting signify a list of songs, like what you see in a Spotify playlist. I hope this painting encourages you to never stop adventuring with those you love.
I Love This Song!
This small but mighty painting is one of my favorites from this collection. Although it's less about human conversation than most of the other paintings, it's still appropriate because music is a catalyst that brings people together. It's also a language in and of itself, that has powerful effects on our hearts and brain. The splashes of bright blue, red, and yellow signify the excitement one gets when hearing their favorite song. The vein-like paint texture signifies the activity that pulses through our brains when we hear music.
I Choose You, Always You
This painting is about being present with loved ones and choosing to lay aside anything that may distract us from what's most important. If you look closely, you'll see a rectangle with three swatches of color. The swatches signify anything we deem as important. The colors infiltrating that rectangle signify distractions that come our way. The blue swatch with white oil pastel around it signifies the choice we make to keep our focus on what matters MOST to us.
Watching The Clouds Float By 1
Watching The Clouds Float By 2
There was a season in my life where I didn't have time to watch the clouds float by. I doubt I ever looked up at the sky at all, during this time. When you're so focused on your dreams and goals, it's easy to forget that time is something we can enjoy. John Lubbock said it best, "Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time". Sometimes connecting with loved ones and ourselves looks like setting aside all the distractions, sitting in silence, and being utterly at peace with time passing by. Savoring every second...watching the clouds slowly drift above us.
If You Were Granted One Wish, What Would it Be?
I love asking people this question because it's a silly and easy way to get to know someone--what they like, their dreams, their future hopes. It also gives someone the chance to dream wildly--something we sometimes stop doing as we get older. The puddle of blue paint signifies the ocean of dreams we all have in our hearts, waiting to be talked about and shared. So, when you look at this painting, I hope it calls out the inner child in you. The one that dreamt daily with abandon.
Isn't it interesting how certain objects bring memories to the forefront of our minds? Beach towels remind me of the happiest memories when I was a kid. Whenever my mom would start pulling out the beach towels, I knew we were either going to our favorite swimming spot for the day or the Oregon Coast for the weekend. Beach towels meant happiness and laughter was right around the corner. For you, something else might trigger fond memories. Despite, I hope you find yourself remembering the best of times when you look at this painting.
Dreaming of Beach Vacations
You might have gathered by now that the ocean is my happy place. I grew up close to the ocean and it became the place I went to, to think, escape from a bad day, or just relax and enjoy life. This painting is filled with hope as it reminds us that sometimes it's our dreams that get us through the hard times. Our dreams of the future--for our family, our career, and our relationships. Often times, over pancakes on Saturday, my family talks about the future and everything we're hoping for. I painted this hoping it would be a symbol of hope in someone's life. A reminder of better days ahead. When things don't go as planned in my life, my mind always takes me to the next time I find myself by the ocean. Without fail, I usually find myself as peace, shortly after.
Date Night With You is My Fave
In relationships, date nights are a great way to connect and feel closer to each other. It's important to get away from the routine and enjoy each other's company--whatever that might look like for you. The thick and creamy swatches of red paint signify red lipstick--a color mostly worn for special occasions. The splash of blue at the top signifies "blue suede shoes". Blue suede shoes were a luxury item in the South, stylish footwear for a night out. While painting this, I hoped it would serve as a reminder of the connection two people have. Too often, when things get rough, it can be easy to forget all the great times. Sometimes we just need a little reminder of the special connection we have with someone we love.
